North Couloir of Los Machos: guided mountaineering in Sierra Nevada
Progress beyond normal winter walking routes with a guided mountaineering objective in Sierra Nevada. The North Couloir of Los Machos combines an approach near Veleta with a snow line requiring previous ice axe and crampon experience.
The published route approaches from Las Posiciones del Veleta, descends through the Veredón towards Corrales del Veleta and continues to the foot of the couloir. After the planned ascent, the return heads towards Carihuela refuge and the starting area.
The route is described as about 250 metres, graded PD, with slopes of 40–45 degrees. These figures describe the itinerary; snow and ice conditions determine its actual demands on the day.
