Kilimanjaro ascent by the Machame route

Work towards Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), Kilimanjaro’s summit, on the Machame route. Mirando al Sur combines a Spanish mountain guide with local guides and porters on a journey through changing environments, from forest to African high mountain terrain.

Descending by Mweka creates a partly circular route. Porters carry the main luggage and set up camp, leaving you with a daypack during the walking stages. The relatively low technical difficulty must be considered alongside the altitude and a long summit day.

Your mountain trip with Mirando al Sur

The programme is aimed at people with mountain or trekking experience who want to attempt a major high-altitude objective with logistical support. Tent nights on the mountain and hotels in Moshi provide different sides of the journey.

The route passes Lava Tower before the final ascent. Summit attempts and timings depend on conditions and the group’s progress; reaching the top or having it to yourselves is not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Why ascend by Machame and descend by Mweka?

This is the programme’s planned combination. It explores different sides of the mountain and creates a partly circular route rather than retracing the entire ascent.

Do I carry all my luggage?

Porters transport the main luggage and set up camp. You carry a daypack while walking; confirm load limits and personal equipment when preparing for the trip.

Do we stay in huts?

The mountain section uses two-person tents. Hotels with breakfast are planned in Moshi.

Do I need to be a climber?

The programme asks for mountain or trekking experience and has a low technical rating. Fitness and altitude remain important, especially on the summit and descent day.

How long is the summit day?

The published reference is around 17 km and 12 hours, climbing from Barafu to Uhuru Peak and descending to Mweka. Actual timings depend on the group and conditions.

Is there a guide from Spain?

The programme includes a Spanish mountain guide from the planned departure point, alongside the local team. Confirm the responsible team, meeting arrangements and guiding language for your departure.

Are tips and flights included?

No. Flights and travel to the departure airport are separate, and the programme identifies tips as a compulsory additional expense.
